How can I have a 6 pack? I want abs like a bodybuilder. I want to look like a lean machine, what is the quickest way to firm up my abs? I've heard these questions more times than I care to remember.

People need to recognize and acknowledge that they all look different. In fact, the look of their muscles could ultimately depend on their genes. Two people with equal muscle size and power and identical bodyfat can have very different looking abs, biceps and noses. That's just reality.

But, that said, getting your abs in perfect shape is a result of just two simple things:

1. Building up your ab muscles and,
2. Reducing the bodyfat covering your ab muscles

Once you have done these two things, you'll look as good as you can look, given your genes. And that's all any of us can ask for in life.

Building Ab Muscles

You've probably seen all those exercise gadgets advertised on late night TV. Things like the lightweight gizmos that make it easier for you to rock back and forth while doing a crunch. Have you noticed that none of them allow you to add serious weight, to increase intensity? Some have rubber bands or similar devices, to add a bit of strain but it's a trivial amount.

I work with clients who have progressed to the point of doing crunches with over 300 pounds! That's the kind of power and level of development your abs are capable of. So fiddling around with cheap exercise equipment, or those electric belts that "stimulate" your ab muscles using the minuscule power of two flashlight batteries, is just ridiculous. It's not only a waste of money, but a waste of time too.

The most intense exercise you can do, to target your abdominal muscles, is to perform weighted crunches. Adding weight to crunches increase the overload to the target muscles and allows you to employ progressive overloading, which is an indispensable condition to muscular hypertrophy.

You can get a complete ultra-high intensity workout from the SuperRep Abs e-booklet, as shown at the end of this article. If you want your abs to be a strong as they can be, this workout is engineered to deliver just that.

Reducing Bodyfat

There is no real secret to losing fat. In a nutshell, you need to burn more calories than you consume. And you can't "spot reduce" fat from just your abs. You have to reduce your overall bodyfat. A great way to do that, is to engage in low intensity aerobics, such as walking on a treadmill, using a stationary exercise bike, or whatever. The real key is to make certain that the intensity is low enough, so that you can do it every day of the week.

That means you should be able to carry on a normal conversation or talk on the telephone, while you're doing this exercise. Higher intensity than that, requires more time off between workouts and that means less activity and fat burning.

Over the longer term, nothing beats adding more muscle to your body as it increases your 24/7 calorie burn and makes it easier to keep the fat off. Actually, it makes it easier to do a lot of things.

I've also had a lot of enquiries about using nutritional supplements, or "diet aids" to help with the task of fat loss. Those of us in the fitness game spend our time researching efficient muscle building, not examining the latest nutritional supplements. So I don't claim to have any special knowledge to pass on to you in that area. The only person I refer people to for that info is Will Brink and you can read about his work just now.

Conclusion

Don't be led astray by gimmicky training aids or miracle weight loss powders. Getting your best-looking abs is as easy and as challenging as building your ab muscles, using rational principles and reducing your bodyfat the same way. Common sense works. Reason works.

Just take action!
